Zoysia Grass Seed and Plugs

Gardening and yard work can be an extremely relaxing experience, but can also be very stressful for people that are not informed about what is in their garden. The maintenance of a garden is not something that can be done once a year for a few hours, as it needs constant attention.

One thing that has been cropping up in many yards is something called zoysia grass. This is not like traditional grass, which is generally soft and lush. Instead, this type of grass is of a medium texture, which has very sharp blades. It is deeply rooted, so absorbs plenty of moisture from the ground and many people question why others even want it in the yard.

The fact is, in the dry and sunny weather of summer, a lot of people like to walk around their yard bare foot. This can be extremely uncomfortable with zoysia grass underfoot, thanks to the sharp blades.

For people that do choose to have this grass in their yard, they need to understand it will not just grow over night. The reality is that many people grow this grass using plugs. After planting, the grass will need to be watered regularly, but expect it may take two years to grow to its full potential.

A lot of people question why others even bother with this type of grass, but there is a good reason for it. The reality is that zoysia grass is the lowest maintenance type of grass there is. After planting and the periodic watering session, there is really nothing left for the gardener to do. Of course, the person who owns the yard needs to ensure they keep their shoes on at all times, otherwise they may have a nasty shock on their feet!

The worst part about this type of grass is that when the summer is over, it will start to turn brown, which is not particularly aesthetically pleasing. Even when the summer starts, it will take a while for the grass to take its normal green color. The good thing is that if other types of grass struggle to grow, it is likely that zoysia grass will be ok, regardless of the soil quality.

For people that are planting, they need to take into account the space they have. Generally, people planting zoysia grass seed or zoysia grass plugs will plan it around 4 inches apart and cut it regularly. Not cutting this grass regularly will make it even harder to cut in the future.
